Our editorial principles
- Independence: recommendations should serve the reader. Commercial relationships must not determine a verdict.
- Transparency: we separate published specifications, research-based judgement and documented hands-on results.
- Accountability: we explain material limitations, name alternatives and correct errors.
Research-based assessments
Most of our reviews are research-based assessments. They draw on manufacturer documentation and clearly identified sources, and each one says how it was researched. We label a score hands-on only when documented testing supports it. A comparison of published features is not a claim that we used every competing product.
Our hands-on testing process
Before labelling a review hands-on, we will record the exact model, purchase or sample source, dates, usage conditions and test method. Audio reviews should document fit, noise cancellation, calls and battery settings. Kitchen reviews should identify recipes, preparation, processing and cleaning. Watch reviews should state routes, activity settings and battery use. Chair reviews should record user measurements, adjustments and desk fit. Software reviews should state platform, plan and tasks attempted.
We will publish actual observations and distinguish them from advertised figures. Duration will be disclosed for each review; we do not promise an unverified minimum testing period.
How we score
Every review scores four criteria from 1 to 5, and the overall score is their average. Three criteria are specific to the category, because what makes a good chair is not what makes good software. The fourth, value for money, is the same everywhere.
| Category | What we score |
|---|---|
| Software and apps | Setup effort, workflow fit, security and data, value for money |
| Tech and gadgets | Features and performance, compatibility, build and support, value for money |
| Home and kitchen | Usefulness, ease of use and cleaning, space and upkeep, value for money |
| Office and workspace | Fit and adjustability, build and warranty, setup and assembly, value for money |
| Outdoors and fitness | Features, fit and comfort range, durability and support, value for money |
A score labelled research-based comes from the manufacturer’s documentation, specifications, pricing and support pages, checked on the date shown. A score labelled hands-on also reflects documented use of the product, with the model, dates and conditions recorded. Buying guides that compare several products may skip scores and explain the trade-offs instead.
Comparisons and ratings
We compare like-for-like features and explain why an alternative may suit a different buyer. Published specifications can inform a shortlist, but cannot establish a measured winner for comfort, sound quality, accuracy or speed. Scores follow the method described under How we score, and each one is labelled research-based or hands-on. We do not publish invented customer ratings or review counts.
Review samples and commercial relationships
Any supplied product, discount or paid relationship will be disclosed in the affected article. Receiving a sample must not guarantee coverage or a positive verdict. Sample handling will be stated when applicable. Affiliate commission rates must not determine rankings or hide a material downside.
Updates and corrections
We review articles when we learn of a meaningful specification, plan or product change. Substantial corrections receive a dated note. Research refreshes and hands-on retests are identified separately; neither is claimed before it has occurred. Readers can report problems through our Contact page.
How we make money
Clearly identified affiliate links may earn us a commission at no additional cost to the reader. Availability, eligibility and retailer terms can vary. Read our Affiliate Disclosure for details. We aim to make the evidence and trade-offs useful whether or not a reader follows a commercial link.
